HISTORY OF ST. BERNARD’S PARISH BELMONT VICTORIA
St. Bernard’s present address is 74 Fryers Road, Highton, its early days beginning in 1941 when it was proclaimed a Parish. Prior to that a Catholic School established in Germantown (Grovedale) in 1854 which closed in 1857 and in the same year another Catholic School (with a wooden shingle roof) opened on an unknown site in Belmont. In 1871 three blocks of land were purchased in Belmont for the sum of twenty-six pounds sterling. Further blocks were subsequently purchased up until 1973, the last being on the corner of Regent and Belmont Streets, where a plaque remains commemorating the Parish's past and presence on this site.
